Empowering Lives with Epilepsy Knowledge and Support.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

About EpiRelief

Epilepsy affects millions of people worldwide, with unpredictable seizures leading to significant challenges in daily life. We propose the development of a wearable device designed to predict epileptic seizures in advance. By continuously monitoring critical bodily parameters and using advanced Cloud based AI algorithms, this device aims to provide early warnings of potential seizures, thereby improving the quality of life for epilepsy patients. This project builds on proven research methodologies and leverages cutting-edge technology to create a reliable and life-changing solution.

Introduction to Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects the brain and causes recurring seizures. These seizures are sudden surges of electrical activity in the brain that can affect how a person feels, behaves, or interacts with the world around them. With over 50 million people affected worldwide, epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, yet it remains widely misunderstood.

Seizure

Seizures happen in two main ways, generalized and focal. This example shows a focal seizure.

Your brain has billions of
cells called neurons that all
connect to create electrical
networks. This network
would be similar to roads
and traffic lights.

Those networks make up
and connect different
parts of your brain,
like different towns.

Seizures happen when the neurons malfunction and electrical signals fire uncontrollably. Think of traffic lights short-circuiting.

The more neurons (traffic
lights) that go haywire,
the more intense or
widespread the seizure
and bodily effects.

Problem

Epilepsy seizures are a harrowing experience, requiring immediate attention with every attack. Despite advancements in medical science, epilepsy remains a social stigma and a dreaded condition, especially if not treated promptly. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports around 50 million cases of refractory epilepsy worldwide, with an additional 0.5 million new cases each year. Currently, there is no market-available solution to predict seizures before they occur, leaving many lives at risk and leading to significant financial burdens due to frequent hospital visits and investigations.

Emergencies

Seizures can strike without warning, creating a sudden and critical situation for the patient. Immediate medical attention is often required, as these unpredictable events can occur anytime, anywhere, potentially leading to dangerous circumstances.

Sleep Issues

Patients with epilepsy often experience sleep disturbances, as they are more prone to having seizures during sleep. These nocturnal seizures can severely disrupt sleep patterns, leading to chronic sleep deprivation and further exacerbating seizure activity, creating a challenging cycle that affects overall health and well-being.

Injuries

Injuries from falling can often lead to more severe mobility issues, especially if left untreated. These injuries may cause additional complications, such as fractures, sprains, and joint problems, which can significantly impact a person’s ability to move and perform daily activities. Preventative measures and prompt medical attention are crucial to mitigate these risks.

EpiRelief

Epirelief is a wearable device designed for real-time monitoring of patients with refractory epilepsy. It utilizes advanced sensors and an integrated EEG to continuously track the patient’s condition, providing crucial data that can prevent multiple hospital visits and reduce the need for repeated MRIs and EEGs. This cost-effective solution offers patients greater convenience and peace of mind, ensuring they receive continuous care without the burden of frequent clinical interventions.

Solution

Early detection and immediate action are crucial in managing epileptic seizures. By utilizing a wearable device that continuously monitors key physiological parameters, we can provide timely warnings to patients, enabling them to take preventive measures before a seizure occurs. This proactive approach not only helps in reducing the risk of injury but also improves the overall quality of life for individuals living with epilepsy.

Early Detection

Predict seizures in advance by continuously monitoring vital body signals, empowering you with timely alerts to take preventive action.

Instant Alerts

The device instantly notifies both the patient and their caretaker upon detecting potential seizure activity, allowing timely intervention and ensuring safety.

SOS Feature

Instantly connect with your caregiver and the nearest hospital for immediate support during an emergency.
